Abstract

In Ayurveda, Talisapatradi choorna (TPC) and Vyoshadi choorna (VSC) are commonly used medicines forcough, cold, asthma, and rhinitis. These symptoms are due to upper respiratory infections of predominantlyof viral origin. Currently, there are no effective medicines except indiscriminate uses of antibiotics, localanesthetics, and pain killers. The conventional formulation of TPC and VSC is difficult to administerso an easy manufacturing lozenge formulation was developed. The phytochemical analysis was doneby preliminary thin layer chromatography (TLC) derivatization studies. High-performance thin layerchromatography (HPTLC) analysis confirmed the presence of herbal actives in the lozenge formulations. The TLC analysis results showed that TPC and VSC contain phytochemicals of flavonoids, steroids andphytosterols, and alkaloids family. The herbal actives were found to be stable in the final formulationwithout any interference with the excipients used in the formulation. The lozenges formulated from TPCand VSC are found to be promising alternatives to traditional form for the traditional Ayurvedic preparation.Compatibility study was done using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and HPTLC study.
