The Effect of Slow Stroke Back Massage on Sleep Quality in Hemodialysis Patients: A Clinical Trial Study

| Abstract | Background: Hemodialysis patients frequently experience sleep disturbances, substantially influencing their quality of life. Safe and non-invasive therapies such as massage are essential in mitigating the adverse effects of sleep deprivation. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the impact of slow stroke back massage (SSBM) on the sleep quality of hemodialysis patients. Methods: This clinical trial included 60 patients selected through convenient sampling in Khoy Shahid Madani Hospital, Iran (2023), and randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The intervention group received back massages thrice a week for 10 minutes over one month. The control group continued with routine care. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) before, and 15 and 30 days after the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 19. Results: Repeated measures analysis showed a significant improvement in sleep quality in the intervention group compared to baseline and on the 15th and 30th days (P < 0.001). On the 30th day, the mean sleep quality score was 10.19 ± 5.39 in the intervention group compared to 12.55 ± 6.2 in the control group. The mean changes in sleep quality scores in the intervention group were 0.73 ± 4.2 on day 15 and 1.63 ± 3.9 on day 30. The independent t-test confirmed that sleep quality significantly improved in the intervention group compared to the control group (P < 0.001). Conclusions: The findings suggest that back massage using the SSBM is a safe and cost-effective intervention to enhance relaxation and improve sleep quality in hemodialysis patients. | en |
