| Abstract | Background: Gastric ulcers are a prevalent chronic issue in the digestive system, incurring considerable financial costs. Recent investigations have revealed that probiotics, such as lactobacilli, may serve as potential treatments for gastric ulcers. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the gastroprotective effects of a powder containing Lactobacillus casei metabolites against gastric ulcers induced by indomethacin in rats. Methods: Gastric ulcers were induced using indomethacin (30 mg/kg). Wistar rats received pretreatment with a powder containing L. casei metabolites at doses of 60, 120, and 240 mg/kg, as well as ranitidine (50 mg/kg), 30 minutes prior to ulcer induction. At the conclusion of the experimental procedure, gastric ulcers, mucosal damage, lipid peroxidation [measured by malondialdehyde (MDA) levels], and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, specifically interleukin-6 (IL-6), were assessed. Results: The powder containing L. casei metabolites significantly reduced the number of ulcers, as well as MDA levels and IL-6, in a dose-dependent manner. The optimal dose for preventing gastric ulcers was found to be 120 mg/kg. Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate that the powder containing L. casei metabolites effectively alleviates indomethacin-induced gastric ulceration, likely through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. | en |
