| Abstract | Background: Eucalyptus camaldulensis essential oil (ECEO) contains bioactive terpenoid compounds with potential antibacterial properties. However, the phytochemical profiles and antibacterial activity of ECEOs obtained from different locations in Khuzestan Province have not been fully characterized. Objectives: This study compared the phytochemical profiles and antibacterial properties of Eucalyptus camaldulensis essential oils (ECEOs) collected from Ahvaz, Dezful, Bostan, and Abadan. Methods: Eucalyptus camaldulensis essential oils (ECEOs) were extracted from dried leaves by hydrodistillation. Their chemical profiles were determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and antibacterial activity was assessed against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by determining minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs). Results: The amount of essential oil recovered differed among the four location-specific samples. GC–MS analysis tentatively identified the constituents through spectral matching with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) library and revealed qualitative and quantitative differences in the chemical profiles, although 1,8-cineole was the predominant compound in all ECEOs. The major variations involved the distribution and abundance of mono- and sesquiterpene constituents. Both bacterial species were susceptible to all essential oils examined. The Abadan ECEO showed the lowest observed MIC and MBC values against E. coli, whereas the Ahvaz ECEO generally showed higher endpoint values. Conclusions: Location-associated differences were observed in the chemical composition and antibacterial activity of the four ECEOs examined. The Abadan ECEO showed the lowest observed MIC and MBC values against E. coli under the experimental conditions. Because leaves from three trees at each location were pooled into a single composite sample, these findings represent variation among the analyzed location-specific samples and should not be generalized to population- or geographic-level effects. Further studies using independent biological samples are required to confirm the reproducibility of these patterns. | en |
