Montelukast as an Effective Drug for Cystitis in Asthmatic Pediatric Cases: A Clinical Trial Study

| Abstract | Background: Montelukast as an anti-inflammatory agent may have been useful in cystitis, so the aim of the present research was to investigate the effect of montelukast in the management of cystitis in children. Methods: The present clinical trial study was conducted on pediatric asthmatic cases with cystitis. Fifty-six cases in Amir Kabir Hospital, with informed consent and inclusion criteria, were considered as the study group. All cases received the standard cystitis treatment method for 10 days; furthermore, the montelukast group received oral montelukast 5 mg daily for 10 days. Then the clinical symptoms of cystitis were investigated after 10 days. Statistical analyses of acquired data were performed using SPSS.26, based on chi-square and t-test. Results: Most of the participants in this study were girls, but the gender distribution of the children in the two groups was not statistically different. The children examined in this study were 6.75 ± 2.51 years old on average. The mean improvement days in the symptoms of hematuria, urinary frequency, and scrotum pain in the montelukast group did not show a significant difference from the control group, but urinary urgency in the montelukast cases was significantly lower than in the control cases (P = 0.005). Conclusions: In asthmatic pediatric cases, a 10-day treatment of cystitis with montelukast reduced the duration of urinary urgency in children but had no effect on urinary burning, urinary frequency, or suprapubic pain in children. | en |
