Abstract | Background: Aging is associated with changes in gastrointestinal functions. Objective: To determine the effects of aging on the cholinergic system of rat isolated ileum. Methods: In this research, isolated ileum from 9 to 11 days, 2 months, 6 months, and one year old male albino rats (N?6) were prepared and their contraction responses were characterized by determining the ED50 of acetylcholine. Findings: According to results, the sensitivity of m-AchRs were decreased in relation to age (The ED50 of acetylcholine in 9-11 days, 2 months, 6 months, and 1 year old rats were 3.46×10^-5, 6.58×10^-5, 1.34×10^-5 and 1.018×10^-4 respectively). The maximum response was observed in 6 months old rats. Conclusion: The decline of responsiveness appears to be the result of age-related changes in cholinergic neuromuscular transmission. |
