Implications of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) on Pharmacy Education: A Narrative Review

| Abstract | Context: In the 21st century, sustainable development has become a global consensus. In this context, the United Nations proposed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among these, SDG4 emphasizes inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning. SDG4 is highly important for global education and is also central to achieving other sustainable development goals. Evidence Acquisition: This narrative review examines the relationship between SDG4 and pharmacy education. It maps the 10 targets of SDG4 to specific implications for pharmacy education and, based on the available literature, proposes a conceptual framework that provides guidance and recommendations for integrating SDG4 into pharmacy education. Results: The recommendations include establishing pharmacy experience courses at the primary and secondary school levels, introducing education on medicines and narcotics at the pre-primary school level, and increasing government support for higher pharmacy education. However, the current global implementation status of SDG4 is not optimistic. The numbers of actions, publications, and events remain relatively low among the 17 SDGs. Conclusions: Global pharmacy educators should take active measures and use SDG4 as a framework to improve pharmacy education outcomes and contribute to achieving SDG4 and all SDGs. | en |
