| Abstract | Background: Vomiting is one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy and significantly affects patients’ quality of life. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effect of Zingiber oil aromatherapy on nausea, vomiting, and quality of life in hospitalized children with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: This study was a parallel, single-blind, controlled, randomized trial conducted on 90 school-age children diagnosed with cancer and hospitalized in Imam Hossein Hospital in Zahedan, Iran, in 2023. The children were randomly assigned by envelope containing cards to two groups (intervention = 45 and control = 45). Self-reported vomiting intensity, the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Pediatric Nausea Assessment Tool for assessing nausea severity, and the Pediatric Quality of Life Questionnaire were used before and after the intervention. The intervention group received routine anti-emetic medications along with four drops of Zingiber oil aromatherapy for 30 minutes before chemotherapy. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 24, t-test, and covariance analysis. Results: Post-intervention, the intervention group's vomiting severity was significantly reduced compared to controls (t = 8.5, df = 88, P < 0.001). Vomiting severity was reduced in the intervention group but remained unchanged in the control group (P < 0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in quality of life before and after intervention between the two groups (t = 3.59, df = 88, P < 0.001). Conclusions: The findings indicate that inhalational aromatherapy with Zingiber oil can help reduce the severity of chemotherapy-induced vomiting and improve the quality of life in pediatric cancer patients. | en |
