Abstract

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality traits and coping style among university students. Material and methods: The sample consisted of 239 female university students that were selected by multistep sampling; it lasted from Jul. to Oct. 2011. They reply to 2 scales: 1) NEO Personality Traits Questionnaire and 2) CISS Coping Style Scale. Data was analyzed with multivariate regression by SPSS 16.0 software. Results: The results showed that the conscientiousness, extraversion and openness were the best predictors of rational coping style. Neurosis and extraversion were the best predictors of detachment coping style. Agreeableness and neurosis were the best predictors of emotional coping style and neurosis was the best predictor of avoidance coping style.
