Abstract

Background: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) refers to a group of chronic arthritic conditions of unknown etiology that affect children. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of family real-time health education based on the Predisposing-Reinforcing-Enabling Constructs in Educational/Environmental Diagnosis and Evaluation (PRECEDE)-Policy, Regulatory, and Organizational Constructs in Educational and Environmental Development (PROCEED) model in children with JIA. Methods: A total of 90 children with JIA, treated at our hospital between January 2023 and October 2024, were enrolled in this study. Participants were sequentially numbered according to their hospitalization order and randomly assigned to either a control group (n = 45), which received routine nursing and routine health education, or a study group (n = 45), which received routine nursing along with PRECEDE-PROCEED model-based family real-time health education. Results: After three months of intervention, both groups demonstrated significant reductions in Family Burden Scale of Disease (FBS) scores and in the “avoidance” and “yielding” dimensions of the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ), along with increased scores in the “facing” dimension (P < 0.05). In addition, both groups showed improved scores on the Children Self-esteem Scale (CSES) and decreased scores on the screen for child anxiety related emotional disorders (SCARED). Notably, the study group exhibited significantly higher CSES scores and lower SCARED scores than the control group after 3 months of intervention (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Family real-time health education based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED model effectively enhances disease-related knowledge, treatment adherence, and self-esteem in children with JIA, while alleviating the psychological burden on both children and their families.
