AbstractBackground: Various effects, such as oxidative stress and the induction of apoptotic genes, have been reported regarding selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) on human cell lines. Objectives: This report studied the effects of SeNPs on SW480, a human colon cancer cell line. Methods: The effects of nanoparticles on the SW480 cell lines were investigated using the MTT assay, measurement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and activities of oxidative enzymes, and the study of Bax, Bcl2, and P53 gene expression. Results: SW480 cells treated with SeNPs showed an increase in oxidative stress and gene expression of Bax and P53, along with a decrease in the expression of the Bcl2 gene. Furthermore, there was a significant reduction in the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzymes. Conclusions: Selenium nanoparticles have the potential to increase oxidative stress and induce the expression of apoptotic genes in SW480 human colon cancer cell lines.en
