Predicting the Use of Reappraisal as an Emotional Regulation Strategy in Iranian Adolescents Based on Traumatic Childhood Experiences

Abstract

Background: Emotion regulation (ER) strategies are associated with psychiatric disorders and even in psychological therapy sessions, teaching useful emotional regulation strategies play a prominent role. Studies have indicated that use ER strategies are associated with childhood maltreatments. Objectives: This study examined model to predict use of reappraisal as an emotional regulation strategy in Iranian adolescents based on traumatic childhood experiences among Iranian adolescents. Methods: Three hundred adolescents (ages 12 - 17; M = 15.99, SD = 1.37) completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and Gross & John Emotion Regulation Scale (ERQ). stepwise regression was used to analyze data. Results: Results indicated that physical neglect and sexual abuse were significant predictors of use of reappraisal (P < 0.05). Conclusions: More research on the role of factors mediating the relationship between childhood traumas and use of reappraisal are needed
